The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices worldwide is forecast to almost triple from 8.74 billion in 2020 to more than 25.4 billion IoT devices in 2030, according to a 2021 report from Statista. Each of these devices generates a large amount of data that requires processing.
Traditionally, the majority of IoT devices send data back to the cloud for analysis; however, if trillions of gigabytes of data are sent to the cloud at once, the data pipelines get clogged and the round trip takes too long. Edge computing brings the power of computing closer to the data, the application, and the users. Whether a camera with AI-enabled computer vision or an autonomous vehicle, edge devices can process some or most of the data locally and send the rest to the cloud.
In the near future, we believe all edge devices will analyze data locally for faster, redundant, connectivity-agnostic IoT processing that is readily scalable.
